Support for expanding oil and gas exports at a numerical all-time high while support for electrifying personal energy consumption increases compared to a year ago. (Positive Energy/Nanos)

Views on the importance of oil and gas to Canada’s economy increases compared to six months ago – A strong majority of Canadians say oil and gas is important to Canada’s current economy (87%) and future economy (71%). This is an increase when compared to six months ago (81% and 63%, respectively) and on par with the all-time highs observed in February 2025 (88% and 70%, respectively).

Nanos conducted an RDD dual frame (land- and cell-lines) hybrid telephone and online random survey of 1,104 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, from July 28th to 30th, 2026 as part of an omnibus survey. The sample included both landline and cellphone respondents across Canada. The results were statistically checked and weighted by age and gender using the latest Census information and the sample is geographically stratified to be representative of Canada. Individuals were randomly called using random digit dialling with a maximum of five call backs.

The margin of error for this survey is ±3.0 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The research was commissioned by the University of Ottawa’s Positive Energy program and was conducted by Nanos Research.
